The Junior Philippine Economics Society (JPES), a duly recognized national confederation of Economics organizations from different universities and colleges in the Philippines and the junior arm of the Philippine Economic Society (PES), which serves as a liaison between professional Economists and Economics students.

Invited SharePHIL to “Equinomix”, an academic event in relation to RA no. 10922 which declared the policy of the State to develop national consciousness on economics and financial literacy. The event was held at the Waldo Perfecto Room in De La Salle University-Manila last Nov. 10, 2018.

Dr. Ben Teehankee, Chairperson of the Research Committee and Board of Trustee talked about:

    · The Roles and Responsibilities of an Investor

    · How should an investor manage his investments?

    · How should an investor respond to economic crisis?

As JPES envisions itself as one of the leading organizations that unites all economics organizations, produces future economics leaders and provides academic and socio-cultural activities for the Filipino youth, it is expected to sustain a harmonious interaction among the students of economics, the faculty and the administration of the academic institutions wherein the member-organizations are based. To ensure that the relationship among these parties is well-maintained shall be a way to help JPES grow and develop throughout the years.

The growing sophistication of financial markets signifies that consumers are not just choosing between interest rates on two different bank loans or savings plans, but are rather being offered a variety of complex financial instruments for borrowing and saving. There may be times when individuals are not able to select the right savings or investments for themselves, and may be at risk of fraud most especially when they are not financially literate. However, if individuals do become financially educated, then they will be more likely to save and to challenge financial service providers to develop products that truly respond to their needs and that should have positive effects on both investment levels and economic growth.

This event equipped the participants with adequate knowledge and most appropriate skills in producing sound and sensible economic and financial judgments through an informative and interactive learning setting. This has provided the attendees with details about investment, the roles and responsibilities of an investor, stock, crypto currencies, fraud and scams.

The Annual Shareholders’ Meeting (ASM) Observation Study is an annual project of the Shareholders’ Association of the Philippines (SharePHIL) to observe the conduct of the ASMs of selected listed corporations. This is line with the Association’s advocacy of promoting good governance practice among companies and protecting minority shareholders’ rights.

The stockholders meeting is enshrined in corporation law and regulatory frameworks as part of the governance infrastructure among publicly listed corporations to protect the rights of ownership of shareholders. In this annual event, they can influence the governance of companies and exercise the right to determine the fundamental composition of the board, elect external auditors and approve the general acts and resolutions of the board and amendments to the company’s charter documents.

The 2017 ASM study covered 44 investee companies in which SharePhil has investments and it focused on the observations of the actual meeting proceedings and monitoring of pre- and post-meeting Information Disclosures that are an essential part of the end-to-end ASM governance process.

OneLife Recap: Money 101- Saving & Investing

OneLife believes that wellness does not only focus on the physical aspect of the body rather, it should take a holistic approach tackling mental, emotional, financial, spiritual, and other aspects.

Last August 16-17, 2018, OneLife in partnership with SharePHIL conducted Money 101: Saving & Investing- a basic financial literacy seminar that will help prepare the employees for financial freedom. SharePHIL is a non-stock and non-profit organization created in 2011 that aims to educate the public about investing and how it can help fuel economic activity and development.

About 85 employees participated in the seminar that taught them the basics of financial literacy discussed by Mr. Jonathan Ravelas. The employees learned how to automate their savings, to build their reserves, to identify the obstacles they encounter in wealth building and how would they address it through SMART goals.

Key takeaways from this learning session are the following:

    • ·       Money amplifies character or lack of it.
    • ·       Saving is a habit, a ritual.
    • ·       Spending is a drug, so be careful.
    • ·       Risk Taking= is a drug too, keep one foot on shore.
    • ·       Character creates TRUST but is not free or easy.

The OneLife team took the opportunity to gather data and responses using the Financial Literacy Survey. The data gathered from the survey will be used as a baseline for future financial literacy programs tailor fit to the need of our employees.

The Philippine Financial Summit (PFS) 2018 is the flagship event of UP JFA’s Investment Month 2018. The summit will focus on gathering and empowering students and young professionals from the most outstanding organizations in the Philippines.

Through the years, UP JFA has stayed true to its vision of spreading financial literacy with various initiatives and events. This year, we focus on making finance more inclusive. Our goal is to make a wider range of people appreciate and understand the role of finance in their lives.

The event was started off by our keynote speaker, SharePHIL Trustee and BDO Capital and Investments, Corp. President, the distinguished Eduardo Francisco. He related to the crowd his life experiences, not only of his triumphs but also of his travails. In doing so, he not only was able to give valuable life advice to the audience, but moving forward, inspired them to never give up.

For our panel, joining Atty. Agnes Bailen of the DBM and Atty. Darlene Berberabe formerly of the Pag-IBIG Fund were Conrado Bate, CEO and President of COL Financial, and Jonathan Ravelas, First Vice President and Chief Market Strategist of BDO Unibank, both active members of SharePHIL. While the former two provided the government perspective on financial literacy and inclusivity, the latter two provided the private sector point of view. During the panel proper, they were both able to convert their technical expertise in the field of finance to impart on the audience the importance of financial inclusivity in creating a brighter Philippines.
